I. Structure and Working Principle

1. Structural Features
Gate valves mainly consist of components such as the valve body, valve bonnet, gate disc, valve stem, and handwheel (or actuators like electric actuators). The valve body is usually a cast or forged structure with a passageway, capable of withstanding the pressure inside the pipeline. The valve bonnet is used to seal the upper part of the valve body to prevent the leakage of the medium. The gate disc is a key component of the gate valve, which can be of a wedge-shaped or parallel structure. The wedge-shaped gate disc is wedge-shaped and can achieve better sealing when closed, blocking the flow of the medium by closely fitting with the valve seat. The parallel gate disc has two parallel surfaces and relies on two valve seats to achieve sealing when closed.
The valve stem connects the gate disc with the handwheel or the actuator. Its function is to convert the rotary motion of the handwheel into the linear up-and-down motion of the gate disc. The handwheel is the part used when manually operating the gate valve. By rotating the handwheel, the valve stem drives the gate disc to rise or fall, thus controlling the opening and closing of the valve. For electric or pneumatic gate valves, the actuators will replace the handwheel and precisely operate the valve stem and gate disc according to control signals.

2. Working Principle
When the gate valve is in the open state, the gate disc is lifted above the passageway of the valve body, and the medium can flow smoothly through the passageway of the valve body. At this time, the pressure of the medium mainly acts on the sides of the valve body and the gate disc, and the pressure on the sealing parts of the valve is relatively small. When closing the gate valve, by rotating the handwheel or the actuator to lower the gate disc, the sealing surface of the gate disc makes close contact with the valve seat, thus cutting off the flow of the medium. Due to the sealing effect between the gate disc and the valve seat, the leakage of the medium can be effectively prevented.
Low Fluid Resistance
When the gate valve is fully open, the gate disc is completely raised, and there is almost no obstruction in the internal passageway of the valve body, allowing the fluid to pass through in a straight line. Compared with other valves (such as globe valves), the fluid resistance coefficient of gate valves is relatively low. For example, in large water supply and drainage pipeline systems, the energy loss of water flowing through gate valves is relatively small, which can ensure a relatively high flow efficiency. This is a very important advantage for occasions requiring large-flow transportation, such as urban water supply and sewage discharge in sewage treatment plants.
Good Sealing Performance​​​​​​​
The sealing of gate valves mainly relies on the close fit between the gate disc and the valve seat. When the valve is closed, the gate disc is under the pressure of the valve stem and can make good contact with the valve seat to form an effective seal. Gate valve production process flow

  • By actuation method:

    Manual flat gate valve: Driven by manually rotating the handwheel to drive the lifting of the gate, thus realizing the opening and closing of the valve. Suitable for small pipeline flow control, simple and convenient to operate, without external power source, and low cost.
    Pneumatic flat gate valve: Powered by compressed air and driven by a pneumatic actuator to drive the movement of the gate.
