Floating Ball Valve Selection Guide: How To Choose The Right Valve for Your System

I. Basic Characteristics of Floating Ball Valve
(1) Structural Principle
The core component of the floating ball valve is a ball that can freely float within the valve body. The outer surface of the ball is machined with a sealing surface, which closely cooperates with the valve seat to achieve sealing. When the valve is opened, the ball separates from the valve seat, and the fluid flows through the passage in the center of the ball; when the valve is closed, the ball closely adheres to the valve seat, cutting off the fluid passage. This structure enables the floating ball valve to have good self-sealing performance, and it can maintain reliable sealing even under medium-low pressure conditions.
(2) Sealing Performance
The sealing of the floating ball valve mainly relies on the close cooperation between the ball and the valve seat. The valve seat usually uses elastic materials (such as polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE, rubber, etc.) or metal materials (such as stainless steel, cemented carbide, etc.). The elastic valve seat has good sealing performance and is suitable for medium-low pressure conditions; the metal valve seat is suitable for working conditions with high temperature, high pressure or highly corrosive media.
(3) Operation Modes
The floating ball valve has various operation modes, including manual, electric, pneumatic and hydraulic. Manual operation is achieved through a handle or handwheel and is suitable for small-diameter and low-frequency operation occasions; electric and pneumatic actuators are suitable for occasions that require remote control or automated operation.

II. Key Factors for Selection
(1) Nominal Pressure
The nominal pressure refers to the maximum allowable working pressure of the valve at the standard temperature. When selecting a floating ball valve, it must be ensured that its nominal pressure is higher than the maximum working pressure in the system. For example, if the working pressure of the system is 1.6 MPa, a floating ball valve with a nominal pressure of PN2.5 or higher should be selected.
(2) Nominal Diameter
The nominal diameter refers to the inner diameter of the valve, which determines the flow capacity of the valve. Selecting an appropriate nominal diameter requires calculation based on the flow requirements of the system. If the diameter is too small, it will lead to an increase in fluid resistance and affect the system efficiency; if the diameter is too large, it will increase costs and installation space.
(3) Medium Type
The medium type is an important factor that must be considered during selection. Different media have different requirements for the valve material and sealing performance. For example, for corrosive media (such as acids, alkalis, etc.), materials with strong corrosion resistance (such as stainless steel, alloy steel, etc.) should be selected; for high-temperature media, materials that can withstand high temperatures (such as carbon steel, alloy steel, etc.) should be selected.

(4) Sealing requirements
Sealing requirements depend on the usage scenarios and safety standards of the system. The sealing of floating ball valves is generally classified into soft sealing (such as PTFE) and hard sealing (such as metal sealing). Soft sealing has good sealing performance and is suitable for medium and low pressure working conditions; hard sealing is suitable for working conditions with high temperature, high pressure, or highly corrosive media.
