In industrial fluid control systems, ball valves are widely used due to their advantages such as compact structure, good sealing performance, and simple operation. Among them, floating ball valves and trunnion ball valves are two common types. They have their own characteristics in structure, performance, and applicable scenarios. The following is a detailed selection guide and performance comparison.
I. Working Principles of Floating Ball Valve and Trunnion Ball Valve
(I) Floating ball valve
The ball of the floating ball valve can float to a certain extent under the action of fluid pressure. When the valve is closed, the ball is in close contact with the valve seat under the action of fluid pressure, thus realizing sealing. Its sealing performance depends on fluid pressure. The greater the pressure, the better the sealing effect.
(II) Trunnion ball valve
The ball of the trunnion ball valve is fixed in the valve body through upper and lower trunnions. The ball cannot move, but the valve seat can float. The valve seat is close to the ball under the action of fluid pressure, thus realizing sealing. This design makes the trunnion ball valve still maintain stable sealing performance under high pressure.
II. Performance Comparison
(I) Sealing performance
• Floating ball valve: The sealing performance is better under high pressure difference, but the sealing performance of the sealing surface may be reduced due to wear during long-term operation.
• Trunnion ball valve: The sealing performance is stable and suitable for long-term operation and high pressure difference occasions.
(II) Flow control
• Floating ball valve: The flow control accuracy is relatively low because the floating of the ball will affect its fit with the valve seat.
• Trunnion ball valve: More accurate flow control can be achieved and is suitable for systems that require precise adjustment.
(III) Pressure resistance performance
• Floating ball valve: Under high pressure difference, the pressure resistance performance may be affected, and the floating of the ball may cause wear of the sealing surface.
• Trunnion ball valve: The pressure resistance performance is better and is suitable for high-pressure occasions.
III. Selection Guide
Floating ball valve
• Application scenarios: Suitable for low-pressure and small-diameter pipelines, especially in occasions that require quick opening and closing and have high requirements for medium cleanliness.
• Advantages: Simple structure, low manufacturing cost, convenient operation and maintenance.
• Disadvantages: Limited pressure resistance ability, not suitable for occasions with high pressure difference or requiring precise flow control.
Trunnion-mounted ball valve
• Application scenarios: Suitable for high-pressure and large-diameter systems, especially for applications that require high sealing performance, frequent flow regulation and harsh working environments.
• Advantages: Strong pressure resistance ability, stable sealing performance, stable operation and strong functional expansibility.
• Disadvantages: Complex structure, high manufacturing cost and high maintenance requirements.
