Floating ball valves feature a simple structure. The ball is only connected to the driving device by the upper valve stem and can displace along the flow path under the pressure of the medium. When closed, the ball is pushed against the outlet valve seat to achieve sealing, making it suitable for small-diameter scenarios such as small water pipelines. In contrast, the ball of a trunnion ball valve is fixed by the upper and lower valve stems. Opening and closing rely on the rotation of the valve stem, and the valve seat moves to hold the ball tightly to complete the sealing. It performs outstandingly in high-pressure and large-diameter working conditions such as long-distance natural gas pipelines.
Floating ball valves use the pressure of the medium to push the ball tightly against the outlet valve seat to achieve unilateral forced sealing, and are commonly used in medium and low-pressure branch pipelines. The ball of a trunnion ball valve is fixed, and it relies on the movement of the valve seat to achieve diversified sealing, such as bi-directional sealing, ensuring zero leakage of the medium in high-pressure and high-risk pipelines in the petrochemical industry.
Floating ball valves are suitable for low-pressure and small-diameter pipelines with a pressure rating below PN16 and a diameter within DN250. The sealing is prone to damage when the medium fluctuates or contains impurities, and the operating torque is relatively large. Trunnion ball valve can withstand high pressures above PN100 and have a diameter of up to DN1200. They have reliable sealing and require less effort to operate, making them especially suitable for high-pressure and high-flow working conditions.
