Long-distance natural gas transmission pipelines serve as the lifeline of energy delivery, and valves act as the critical nodes along these pipelines. Under harsh operating conditions characterized by high pressure, flammable and explosive media as well as long-term continuous operation, the sealing performance, reliability and maintainability of valves directly determine pipeline safety and operational costs. Thanks to targeted design and outstanding performance, J-VALVES 3PC butt welded trunnion ball valves have become the ideal choice for long-distance natural gas transmission pipelines.
Long-distance natural gas pipelines operate under unique working conditions, imposing stringent requirements on valves:
High-pressure operation: Pipeline pressure generally ranges from Class 150 to Class 600, and some high-pressure sections exceed Class 900. Valves must feature extremely high body strength and pressure-bearing capacity.
Flammable and explosive medium: Natural gas is a flammable and explosive medium. Leakage will easily lead to safety accidents. Therefore, valves are required to achieve zero leakage, along with fire-safe and anti-static functions.
Long service life & difficult maintenance: Most pipelines are buried underground, making installed valves hard to remove. High reliability and easy maintenance are essential to cut down downtime and maintenance expenses.
Impurity-containing medium: Natural gas may contain sulfides, moisture and solid particles, so valves need excellent corrosion resistance and erosion resistance.
To adapt to the severe working conditions of long-distance natural gas pipelines, J-VALVES has carried out multiple optimized designs for its 3PC butt welded trunnion ball valves:
The valve body is forged from A105 or LF2 steel. Heat treatment refines the internal grain structure to enhance body strength and toughness, enabling the valve to withstand pressure ratings up to Class 2500. According to the corrosion level of the medium, special anti-corrosion treatments such as protective coating or corrosion-resistant alloy materials can be applied inside the valve body to effectively resist corrosion caused by sulfides in natural gas.
Adopting a trunnion-mounted ball plus flexible seat sealing structure, the seats are made of PTFE or reinforced PTFE. The seats closely fit the ball under medium pressure to realize bi-directional sealing. Spring preloading devices are installed on the back of valve seats to maintain superior sealing performance even under low pressure, thoroughly preventing natural gas leakage.
The valves fully comply with API 607 fire safety standards. In case of fire, after the soft seat material is burnt out, the metal seat will form a metal-to-metal hard seal with the ball to prevent massive medium leakage. Meanwhile, anti-static springs are fitted between the stem, ball and valve body to discharge static electricity generated during valve operation and avoid explosions caused by static accumulation.
The split three-piece design allows technicians to take out the ball and seats for inspection or replacement simply by loosening connecting bolts, without removing the entire pipeline. It greatly reduces the maintenance difficulty and costs of buried valves. Additionally, the full port design enables pipeline pigs to pass through smoothly, facilitating regular pipeline cleaning and upkeep.
For an overseas long-distance natural gas pipeline project, the client selected J-VALVES 24" Class 600 3PC butt welded trunnion ball valves as pipeline isolation valves. The total length of the pipeline exceeds 200 kilometers with a pressure rating of Class 600, and the conveyed medium is natural gas containing a small amount of hydrogen sulfide.
J-VALVES provided the following customized solutions for the project:
LF2 low-temperature carbon steel is adopted for the valve body to adapt to the low-temperature environment along the pipeline route;
Reinforced PTFE is used for valve seats to deliver excellent corrosion resistance and wear resistance;
Anti-static devices and fire-safe structures are equipped to meet local safety regulations.
Put into service in 2009, these valves have been running stably for more than 17 years with no leakage or malfunctions. During routine maintenance in 2023, technicians completed internal inspection and seal replacement for one valve within just half a day. Compared with traditional monolithic ball valves, the maintenance time was reduced by 80%, helping the client save substantial operational and maintenance costs. The client commented: "J-VALVES valves are not only reliable in performance, but their user-friendly maintenance design has solved a major problem for our pipeline operation."
With targeted design optimizations, J-VALVES 3PC butt welded trunnion ball valves are perfectly adapted to the harsh working conditions of long-distance natural gas transmission pipelines, delivering safe, reliable and efficient fluid control solutions for clients. Moving forward, J-VALVES will continue to focus on the energy industry, keep upgrading product performance, and supply premium valves and professional services for energy transmission pipelines across the globe.
