The core component of a ball valve is a sphere with a central hole. The fluid is cut off and opened by rotating the sphere 90 degrees. The sphere is installed in the valve body and closely cooperates with the valve seat to form a seal. When the hole of the sphere is aligned with the pipeline, the fluid can pass smoothly; when the sphere is rotated 90 degrees and the hole is perpendicular to the pipeline, the fluid is cut off. The operation mode of the ball valve is simple and fast. Usually, only a quarter-turn rotation of the handle or actuator is required to complete the switch.
The gate valve controls the flow of fluid through the lifting of the gate. The movement direction of the gate is perpendicular to the fluid direction. When the gate is fully raised, the fluid can pass freely; when the gate is lowered and closely fits the valve seat, the fluid is completely cut off. The operation of the gate valve usually requires rotating the handwheel or using an electric actuator. Its opening and closing process is relatively slow, but it can provide good sealing performance.
Oil and gas industry: Used for rapid shut-off and flow control in pipeline systems, especially in occasions requiring quick response.
Chemical industry: Suitable for the control of corrosive media such as acids, alkalis and organic solvents.
Food processing industry: Due to its hygienic and easy-to-clean characteristics, ball valves are often used in the production process of food and beverages.
HVAC system: Used to control the flow of hot water, chilled water and cooling water.
Water supply and drainage system: Gate valves are widely used in urban water supply and sewage treatment systems to control the on-off of water flow.
Power industry: Used in power plants to control the flow of steam and cooling water.
Oil and gas pipelines: Used for truncation and isolation of long-distance pipelines, especially in occasions requiring large diameters and high pressures.
Mining industry: Used to control slurry and other media containing solid particles.
Whether to choose a ball valve or a gate valve should be determined according to specific working conditions and application requirements. Here are some selection suggestions:
• For occasions requiring quick opening and closing: If your system needs to quickly cut off the fluid, such as isolating the pipeline in an emergency or requiring frequent operations, a ball valve is a better choice.
