How To Select 3PC Forged Steel Floating Ball Valves under BS 5351 And ANSI B16.34 Standards

Understanding BS 5351 and ANSI B16.34 Standards

BS 5351 Standard

BS 5351 is a specification forged steel ball valves in the petroleum and petrochemical industry, formulated by the British Standards Institution (BSI). It applies to ball valves with pressure classes ranging from Class 150 to 2500LB. This standard provides detailed regulations on the design, manufacturing, inspection, and testing of ball valves, aiming to ensure the reliability and safety of ball valves in harsh environments such as petroleum and petrochemical industries. For example, in terms of materials, ball valves must be made of materials that comply with relevant standards, such as the commonly used A105, F304, or F316. During the manufacturing process, all aspects including forging, heat treatment, machining, and assembly must follow corresponding process requirements. At the same time, there are clear regulations on the dimensions and tolerances of ball valves to ensure their interchangeability and compatibility. In the inspection and testing stage, various tests such as pressure tests, sealing performance tests, and corrosion resistance tests are specified. Only ball valves that pass these strict tests meet the requirements of this standard.

ANSI B16.34 Standard

ANSI B16.34 is a standard forged valves issued by the American National Standards Institute, applicable to various types of valves, including 3PC forged floating ball valves. This standard comprehensively regulates the design, face-to-face dimensions, pressure-temperature ratings, materials, inspection, and testing of valves. In terms of design, it clearly defines the structural forms and design criteria of valves; for pressure-temperature ratings, it provides references for the pressure-bearing capacity of different materials at various temperatures; in material selection, it also defines the application ranges and performance requirements of various steel materials and other materials; in the inspection and testing process, strict procedures and acceptance criteria are specified to ensure the quality of valves.

Key Elements for Selecting Ball Valves Based on Standards

Pressure Rating Matching

  • Consideration of Pressure Ratings under BS 5351 Standard: According to the BS 5351 standard, the pressure ratings of ball valves are classified into Class 150, Class 300, Class 600, Class 900, Class 1500, and Class 2500, etc. In practical applications, it is necessary to select a ball valve with an appropriate pressure rating according to the design pressure of the pipeline system. For example, if the design pressure of the pipeline system is 10MPa, through pressure rating conversion, a ball valve of Class 600 may be required under the BS 5351 standard. At the same time, pressure fluctuations and peak values that may occur in the system should be considered, and an appropriate pressure margin should be reserved to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the ball valve under various working conditions.

  • Pressure Rating Matching under ANSI B16.34 Standard: The pressure rating classification in the ANSI B16.34 standard is similar to that of BS 5351, but the representation methods may vary slightly. Similarly, selection should be made according to the actual pressure requirements of the pipeline system. For instance, if the continuous working pressure of a pipeline system at a specific temperature is 150psi, the appropriate pressure rating of the ball valve can be determined according to the pressure-temperature rating table of ANSI B16.34. In addition, for pipeline systems with water hammer effects or pressure surges, the pressure rating should be selected more carefully to avoid damage to the ball valve caused by sudden increases in pressure.

Material Selection

  • Material Requirements Complying with BS 5351 Standard: BS 5351 stipulates that the materials of ball valves must meet relevant standards. Common valve body materials include carbon steel (such as A105), which is suitable for general industrial environments and offers good strength and cost-effectiveness; stainless steel materials (such as F304, F316) have excellent corrosion resistance and are suitable for working conditions with corrosive media, such as pipelines for transporting acidic or alkaline media in chemical production. When selecting materials, in addition to considering the corrosiveness of the media, the operating temperature should also be taken into account. For example, in high-temperature environments, the strength of certain carbon steel materials may decrease, and at this time, heat-resistant alloy steel materials may be required.

  • Material Selection in Compliance with ANSI B16.34 Standard: The regulations on the materials of ball valves in ANSI B16.34 are similar to those of BS 5351, but there may be slight differences in specific material standards and performance requirements. Similarly, selection should be made according to the characteristics of the media and the operating temperature. For example, in the food and beverage industry, due to high hygiene requirements, stainless steel materials that meet hygienic standards, such as 316L stainless steel, are usually selected. This material is not only corrosion-resistant but also meets the safety requirements for food-grade contact. At the same time, for some special media, such as strongly oxidizing media, ball valves made of special alloy materials may be required to ensure the service life and reliability of the valves.

Structural Design Requirements

  • Key Points of Structural Design under BS 5351 Standard: According to the BS 5351 standard, the structural design of 3PC forged floating ball valves must meet certain strength and sealing requirements. The 3PC structure facilitates the installation, maintenance, and repair of the valves. During the design process, it is necessary to ensure that the connections between various components are firm and reliable. For example, the connecting bolts between the valve body and the valve cover should have sufficient strength to withstand the pressure of the pipeline system. The design of the floating ball structure should ensure that the ball can closely fit the valve seat under the action of the medium pressure to achieve good sealing performance. At the same time, to prevent safety problems caused by static electricity accumulation on the ball, an anti-static device is usually designed to conduct the static electricity generated on the ball to the ground.

  • Regulations on Structural Design in ANSI B16.34 Standard: The ANSI B16.34 standard has clear regulations on the face-to-face dimensions, bore sizes, etc. of ball valves. The face-to-face dimensions should meet the standard requirements to ensure correct connection with other pipe fittings in the pipeline system. The selection of the bore size should be determined according to the flow requirements of the pipeline system. Full-bore ball valves are suitable for occasions with high flow requirements, which can reduce fluid resistance; while reduced-bore ball valves are used in situations where space is limited or the flow requirements are relatively low. In addition, in the design of the valve stem, it should meet the blowout prevention requirement, that is, when the internal pressure of the valve rises abnormally, the valve stem will not be blown out, ensuring the safety of operators.

Inspection and Testing

  • Inspection and Testing Process of BS 5351 Standard: According to the BS 5351 standard, ball valves must undergo strict inspection and testing before leaving the factory. Pressure tests include shell tests and sealing tests. The shell test is used to inspect the strength of the valve body to ensure that there is no leakage or deformation of the valve body under the specified pressure; the sealing test mainly inspects the sealing performance between the ball and the valve seat. By filling the valve with the medium at the specified pressure, it is checked whether there is any leakage at the sealing surface. In addition, corrosion resistance tests may also be carried out. The ball valve is placed in a simulated corrosive environment, and after a certain period of testing, the corrosion situation of the valve is checked to evaluate its corrosion resistance in actual working conditions. Only ball valves that pass these inspections and tests are considered to meet the requirements of the BS 5351 standard.

  • Testing Requirements of ANSI B16.34 Standard: The ANSI B16.34 standard also puts forward strict requirements for the inspection and testing of ball valves. In addition to conventional pressure tests and sealing tests, it may also include low-temperature tests (for ball valves used in low-temperature environments) and fire tests (for occasions with fire protection requirements). The low-temperature test should ensure that the ball valve can operate normally under low-temperature working conditions, and all components will not suffer from problems such as brittle fracture due to low temperature; the fire test requires that the ball valve can still maintain a certain period of sealing performance and operability when a fire occurs, preventing the spread of fire through the pipeline system. Through these comprehensive tests, the reliability and safety of ball valves under various complex working conditions are ensured.
