The Differences between Gate Valve API 600 Standard And ASME B16.34 Standard

In the field of industrial valves, API 600 standard and ASME B16.34 standard are two important reference bases. They have different emphases in the design, manufacture and application of gate valves. The following are the main differences between the two.

  1. Scope of application

    • API 600: Mainly for bolted bonnet steel gate valves in the petroleum and natural gas industries, applicable to heavy-duty series valves with flange and butt weld connection ends.

ASME B16.34: It has a wider coverage, including various valve types such as gate valves, globe valves, check valves, butterfly valves and ball valves, and is applicable to flange, threaded and welded end connections.

  2. Pressure and temperature requirements

    • API 600: It stipulates a wider temperature range and is suitable for extreme temperature conditions commonly found in the petroleum and natural gas industries. Its pressure ratings include Class 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500.

    • ASME B16.34: Based on general pressure-temperature ratings, it is suitable for various industrial scenarios.

  3.  Material requirements

    • API 600: It has stricter requirements for materials, especially for petroleum and natural gas applications in corrosive and high-temperature environments.

    • ASME B16.34: The material selection is more flexible and suitable for various industrial environments.

  4. Testing requirements

    • API 600: The testing requirements are more stringent, especially for high-pressure and high-temperature applications.

    • ASME B16.34: It provides standard testing procedures and is suitable for various valve types.

  5. Structural characteristics

    • API 600: Usually adopts bolted bonnet, and the design pays more attention to high pressure resistance and corrosion resistance.

    • ASME B16.34: The structural design pays more attention to universality and diversity and is suitable for various valve types.
