Basic Characteristics of Gate Valves and Ball Valves
(I) Gate Valve
A gate valve is a kind of valve that controls the flow on and off by lifting and lowering the gate. Its main characteristics include:
• Low fluid resistance: The flow passage of the gate valve is straight through. When the gate is fully opened, the fluid can pass through without obstruction, so the fluid resistance is small.
• Good sealing performance: The sealing surface of the gate valve is large and can provide good sealing effect. Especially in the fully opened state, the sealing surface is less eroded.
• Wide application range: Gate valves are suitable for a variety of fluid media, including water, steam, oil products and corrosive media.
• High temperature and high pressure resistance: The structure of the gate valve is relatively strong and can withstand high temperatures and pressures.
(II) Ball Valve
A ball valve controls the flow on and off by rotating the ball. Its main characteristics include:
• Quick switching: The opening and closing of the ball valve only needs to rotate 90 degrees, and the operation is light and convenient. It is suitable for occasions where the medium needs to be cut off or connected quickly.
• Excellent sealing performance: The ball valve realizes sealing through the close contact between the ball and the valve seat, and can maintain good sealing performance in high pressure, high temperature or corrosive media.
• Low fluid resistance: The flow passage of the ball valve is unobstructed, and the pressure loss of the fluid is small when passing through.
• Wide application range: Ball valves are suitable for a variety of media, including gases, liquids and low-viscosity fluids.
Selection decisions under key working conditions
High-pressure working condition
In a high-pressure environment, the sealing performance and pressure resistance of valves are key factors. Both ball valves and gate valves can work under high-pressure conditions, but each has its own advantages:
• Ball valve: Due to its compact structure and excellent sealing performance, the ball valve can provide reliable sealing under high-pressure conditions and operates quickly, suitable for occasions that require rapid shutoff.
• Gate valve: The gate valve has strong high-pressure resistance, and the fluid resistance is small in the fully open state, suitable for high-pressure transmission pipelines.
High-temperature working condition
High-temperature working conditions place higher requirements on the material and sealing performance of valves:
• Ball valve: The ball valve may be limited by sealing materials under high-temperature working conditions, but by choosing suitable high-temperature sealing materials, the ball valve can also work in high-temperature environments.
• Gate valve: The structure of the gate valve is relatively sturdy and can withstand relatively high temperatures, and its sealing performance is relatively stable at high temperatures.
Corrosive medium working condition
In a corrosive medium environment, the corrosion resistance of the valve is the key to selection:
• Ball valve: The sealing performance of the ball valve is better, and corrosion-resistant materials (such as stainless steel, polytetrafluoroethylene, etc.) can be selected to deal with corrosive media.
• Gate valve: The gate valve can also select different corrosion-resistant materials according to the characteristics of the medium, but its sealing surface is easily worn by impurities in the medium and requires regular maintenance.
