Can The Performance of Wedge Gate Valves Be Affected by Changes in Temperature Or Pressure?

The performance of wedge gate valves can be affected by changes in temperature and pressure. Here's how:

Temperature Changes

  • Sealing and Wedging Issues: In high-temperature environments, the material strength of the valve components may decrease, and the hardness of the sealing surfaces may reduce. This can cause the sealing pair to enter a state of adhesive stickiness. If the closing torque is not properly adjusted and combined with the thermal expansion of the valve stem, it can lead to a sharp increase in sealing surface pressure, resulting in the wedge gate getting wedged. Forced opening in such a state can cause abrasion of the sealing surface, leading to leakage or even fracture of the valve stem or the wedge gate's T-slot.

  • Impact on Elastic and Rigid Wedges: For elastic wedge gate valves, although they are less likely to get wedged compared to rigid ones when the medium temperature changes, if the temperature change is significant enough, it can still affect their performance. The elastic properties of the wedge may change, potentially reducing its ability to maintain a proper seal. For rigid wedge gate valves, due to their inability to compensate for valve seat alignment changes caused by thermal fluctuations, they are more prone to getting wedged when the temperature changes. The high machining accuracy requirements for the wedge half angle also make them more sensitive to temperature-induced deformations.

  • Effect on Valve Materials: Extreme temperature changes can also cause thermal stress in the valve body and other components. This can lead to material fatigue, cracking, or other forms of damage over time, ultimately affecting the overall performance and lifespan of the valve.

Pressure Changes

  • Sealing Performance: Changes in pressure can significantly impact the sealing performance of wedge gate valves. When the pressure in the pipeline increases, the force exerted on the gate and the valve seat also increases. If the sealing surfaces are not in perfect condition or if there is any wear or damage, the increased pressure can cause the valve to leak. On the other hand, if the pressure is too low, the sealing may not be sufficient to prevent leakage either, as the force holding the gate against the valve seat may not be enough.

  • Impact on Valve Operation: Higher pressures require more force to open and close the valve. This means that the operating torque required for the valve actuator increases, which may put additional stress on the actuator and other components. If the actuator is not powerful enough to handle the increased torque, it may lead to problems such as slow operation, incomplete opening or closing, or even failure of the actuator. In some cases, excessive pressure can also cause the gate to deform, affecting its smooth movement and sealing ability.

  • Cavity Pressure Abnormalities: In certain situations, such as when high-temperature and high-pressure fluids are trapped in the valve cavity, abnormal pressure increases can occur. This can happen when the upstream fluid temperature rises, causing the trapped fluid in the cavity to heat up and potentially vaporize, leading to a rapid increase in pressure. Such abnormal pressure can cause significant stress on the valve components, potentially resulting in damage to the valve stem, gate, or other parts, and even leading to valve failure
